ENLS 220.01 Young Adult Fiction TR 8:30-9:50am Virginia Zimmerman
From Wonderland to Panem, Young Adult Fiction follows young people as they confront confusion and cruelty, enjoy adventure and humor, and develop their understanding of their own power and limitations. Some stories involve mortal peril and heroism; others involve family and friends; all showcase real emotions, real challenges, and the real business of growing up. In this course, we will examine a body of middle-grade and young adult fiction that stretches from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Students will discover that fiction for young people offers a complex and varied view of youth, coming of age, adulthood, and an array of psychological and social concerns. Together, we will theorize this literature and will remain mindful of its unique relationship to audience–most of the novels assigned address adolescents and adults at once. Because this is an evidence-based writing course, we will also give considerable attention to how to formulate persuasive arguments, articulated with clarity and grace. ARHC W2
ENLS 318.01 Golden Age of Children’s Lit TR 1-2:20pm Virginia Zimmerman
In this seminar, we will explore the beginnings of children’s literature in the period 1850-1920, known as the “Golden Age Children’s Literature.” As we focus on the development of the genre, we will also consider what role books for children played in a time of shifting notions of gender, class, race, and even childhood itself.
